Home -- Preventative Care
Please call us to make an appointment.
A healthy happy pet brings joy to it's family. Keeping your pet healthy is best done with preventative medicine, just like for people.
Dogs
Dogs should be vaccinated every year for Corona and DHLPP, and every
3 years for Rabies. If they are kenneled, then a vaccine for kennel
cough (bordatella) should be administered every 6 months.
Cats
Cats should be vaccinated yearly for FVRCP and every 3 years for Rabies. We also
recommend leukemia vaccine for cats.
Heartworms
In South Texas heartworms bring an early death to thousands of pets. There are
several options for heartworm prevention. We have oral medication which are
given once a month, and there are monthly topical medications that helps to
prevent fleas, ticks, and earmites as well as preventing heartworms.
Our newest heartworm
preventive medication is a six month injectable. For people with hectic
schedules that might forget the monthly medications this may be the most
convenient.
Ticks & Fleas
For ticks, we recommend a Preventic® collar which lasts for 3 months.
Revolution® is the convenient all-in-one topical which prevents heartworms,
fleas, ticks and earmites.
Advantix® is the newest topical medication which in
addition to preventing fleas and ticks, it also helps to repel mosquitoes.
Note that any of the medications can be overwhelmed by sheer numbers of fleas and
ticks so you may find it necessary to spray the yard and treat the house if you
are still seeing these pesky parasites.
Breeding
Unless you have a purebred pet there is little reason to let them breed. There
is no benefit to your pet for having a litter of puppies or kittens. On the
other hand there are numerous benefits to having them spayed or neutered. They
will live longer and be healthier with less chance of developing certain cancers
and other diseases.
Aging
Older pets require additional care, especially regular health screening to
detect aging changes that may not be obvious during a physical exam.
Teeth
All pets, not just older ones, need regular dental care. This includes brushing
the teeth and dental cleaning and polishing when the tarter builds up. This not
only prevents gingivitis periodontal diseases and tooth loss but also helps to
prevent a major source of liver, kidney and heart disease. The bacteria in
tarter can get into the rest of the body where it can wreak havoc. Ask us about
tips on brushing and specific oral care diets.
Diet
A high quality diet is important to help keep your pet in optimal physical
health. We recommend a variety of Hills Science Diets including their newest
more natural diet called Natures Best. We also stock a large number of Prescription
Diets for specific health conditions of your pet.
Boarding
If you will be away from home, your pet can be kenneled at Cowboy Kennels which
is owned and operated by Dr. and Mrs Kirlin. If your pet has medical needs, and requires more than routine care, we can keep it here in our hospital.
Birds, Snakes, ...
Birds and exotics require special care. This starts with proper nutrition. The
majority of health problems that we see in these pets are a direct result of
poor or improper nutrition, or secondary to this. Bird diets predominant on
seeds are particularly problematic. Dr. Kirlin can discuss proper nutrition for
your specific pet.
Schedule a visit. We look forward to meeting you and your pet.
